Abstract
Alzheimer’s disease is characterized by progressive loss of memory and other mental abilities such as judgment, language, planning, impairment of daily activities and deficiency in socia linteraction[1,2]which is caused by neuro degeneration [3] .The aim was to study serum Interleukin-6 (IL-6) levels in patients with Alzheimer’s dementia. The objective was to find out the correlation between the serum levels of IL-6 and the severity of Alzheimer’s dementia. Mini–Mental State Examination (MMSE), having questions of total 30 points was used to measure cognitive impairment [4] .Score of 24 or more (out of 30) indicates a normal cognition. Score≤9 point indicates severe, 10–18 points indicates moderate and 19–23 points indicates mild cognitive impairment[5].The DIA source IL-6-ELISA , a solid phase Enzyme Amplified SensitivityImmuno assay was done on microtiter plate for IL-6 estimation. Our study showed that the serum IL-6 levels were significantly increased (p value<0.001) in cases as compared to controls and also correlated positively with the disease severity. So, modulation either withit’s production orits effects could offer a major breakthrough in prevention and treatment of the disease.
