A CLASSICAL DRUG REVIEW ON GUNJADI TAIL W.S.R.TO KHALITYA.
Dr. Ranjan Kumar Dubey, Prof. Ajay Chaturvedi
Abstract
Teja along with Vatadi Dosha burn the Keshbhoomi to produce Khalitya". Chakrapani, while
commenting on this, points out that Dehoshma is to be understood by the word Teja and Dehoshma is
directly proportional to Pitta. Vata, Pitta and Kapha Dosha and Rakta Dushya are the main internal
causative factors of Khalitya. Acharya Charaka says that after adequate Samshodhana, patient of Khalitya
should be subjected to Nasya, massage of oil and Shirolepa. (Ch. Chi. 26/262). Importance of ShiroAbhyanga is well accepted in the treatment of Khalitya. Khalitya is a disease with Vata-Pitta dominancy.
Hence such drugs, which are antagonist to Vata and Pitta were opted while choosing drugs for therapy.
Khalitya is a sign of early aging process, to counteract this increased catabolic process. Rasayana drugs
are included as a complimentary measure. In this study, Gunja Taila referred in Yoga Ratnakara Samhita
is analysed in detail. Gunja Taila has Katu, Tikta, and Kashaya Rasa having Madhura, Katu Vipaka Ushna
Virya, and Ruksha Guna. It pacifies Kapha-Pitta and Vata-Pitta Doshas, and shows properties such
as Keshya (hair tonic), Twachya (improves skin complexion), Vrishya (aphrodiasias),
and Vatavyadhihar (disease due to Vata Dosha or neurological disease). Gunjadi Taila acts as a hair
growth promoter. It is useful in various hair related ailments like hairfall, hair thinning, scalp itching,
scalp acne, dandruff, scalp psoriasis, etc.
