Abstract
Background: Ectopic pregnancy (EP) is a prevalent disorder in women at reproductive age; salpingostomy and salpingectomy are surgical alternatives.
Purpose: To compare the fertility results after laparoscopic salpingectomy and salpingotomy in ectopic pregnancy.
Methods: This retrospective research was conducted at (Omomah center for endoscopic surgery) from October 2017 to October 2020. The participants (n= 90) aged between 20-40 years were diagnosed as having EP via ultrasound. The study population was separated into two equal groups, the salpingectomy group (num.=45) and the salpingotomy group (num.=45). All patients wished to maintain their potential for reproduction. The subsequent monitoring time was 24 months including assessments for basic intrauterine pregnancy (IUP), recurrence of ectopic pregnancy as well as inability to conceive.
Results: There was statistically significant variance between salpingectomy and salpingotomy patients regarding childbearing (44.4% versus 22.22%) (p=0.01). There was none statistically significant difference between both groups according to pregnancy rates, caesarean section rates, mean dimension of mass, prior abortion rates as well as fertility outcomes (IUP, EP and infertility) (p<0.05).
Conclusions: In the medical setting, the decision to use surgery to treat EP needs to be thoroughly assessed, taking into account the patient's intention to have children in the coming years.
