A Pragmatic Study of Idioms of Lying in the British and American English

Abstract
Idioms are used pragmatically through the daily language. as well as they presented in some British and American English dictionaries .there are main characters of idioms and reasons behind using them through conversation. There are pragmatic factors inside the social context influence the use of those expressions .in addition to the conversation principles identifying of idioms within the language used to reveal the role of the language knowledge in interrupting the intended meaning of idioms.to show How idioms used pragmatically and to refer and show the influential factors in pragmatic the study is based to fulfill the following objectives 1-identifying idioms and expressing the reasons behind it`s using by the speaker 2- the study aims to show how people use idioms for certain purposes like lying and how they employed those idioms. to convey a meaning that is far from its literal meaning 3- investigating the ability of listeners or readers to get the intended meaning from those items of language that are actually far from there meaning and 4- uncovering the social knowledge of speakers that they use to explain the meaning of those items . Consequently, this study hypothesizes that 1-the framework will be adopted in this study can be applied with too much flexibility to analyze in the linguistic features of items in language under investigation.2- the literal and the pragmatic characteristics of idioms are crucial points in constricting the intended meaning .3-the investigating data is expected to follow very specific and defined socially used items as an indirect way of presenting different types of meanings 4-idioms can be explained as a separate items inside dictionaries of English language. In order to achieve the aims of the present study and verify these hypothesis the following procedures will be followed: 1-reviewing the basic principles related to the current study .2- Adopting a quad framework of analysis which consist of linguistic literal and pragmatic aspects.3- analysing the data qualitatively ( social knowledge of the speakers of English And quantitatively by analyzing twenty five idiom of Lying.4- discussing the results of analysis. The current research is after presenting Significance to those students and professors who are interested in investigating idiomaticity. Pragmatic use includes linguistic and social experiences by the speaker and listener, while researchers and language learners need to know the details of pragmatic use provided by this study.
