A STUDY OF NEED FOR GUIDANCE AMONG ADOLESCENTS IN RELATION TO THEIR EDUCATIONAL STREAM

Abstract
The act of supporting people in making informed choices that will lead to the resolution of their
educational, professional, or personal concerns is referred to as "guidance," and the name "guidance"
refers to the process itself. Self-awareness is a process that helps people gain a better understanding of
their own abilities, aptitudes, interests, perspectives, as well as their own strengths and limitations. This
is because individuals are able to gain a better understanding of their own talents, aptitudes, interests,
and perspectives. Children go through a period known as adolescence, which is characterized by
significant development in both their physical and psychological states, as well as shifts in their
perceptions of and expectations from their social environments. Problems in different aspects of life,
such as one's personal life, their social life, and their education, are inevitable as a natural consequence
of maturing into an adult. The main aim of the study are to identify the guidance needs of adolescents of
Chennai city and to outline the guidance needs of higher school students. The study has been carried
out in Chennai during the April 2022 with an aim to understand the guidance needed by the adolescent
students to improve their career. It is a qualitative study made with the behaviour of the higher
secondary students. 400 higher secondary students have been selected using the simple random
technique from the study area as sample respondents. 200 respondents each have been selected from
the boys and girls respectively. 145 (36.3%) students from arts stream and 255 (63.8%) students from
the science stream are selected. The primary data were collected using the Google forms. The study
concluded that the level of guidance needed for the vocational, social, psychological, educational and
physical is not vary significantly according to the education stream studied. .
