A STUDY OF PREVALENCE AND CORRELATES OF ANXIETY DISORDERS IN PATIENTS SUFFERING FROM PULMONARY TUBERCULOSIS

Abstract
Background: The prevalence of anxiety disorders in patients with pulmonary tuberculosis is significantly high. The Psychiatric morbidity is related to the duration of illness, the degree of incapacitation and the knowledge of sputumAFB positive status. Aims & objectives: The Aim of the study is to assess the Prevalence of Anxiety disorders in patients suffering from Pulmonary Tuberculosis &to study the relationship between Anxiety disorders and socio-demographic variables and clinical variables like duration of illness, complicationsof pulmonary tuberculosis and type of treatment. Settings & Design: This is a cross sectional study conducted on 120 patients who were diagnosed as having pulmonary tuberculosis recruited from outpatient department of Psychiatry, MIMS Medical college, Vizianagaram. Methods & Material: MINI – International Neuro Psychiatric Interview Scale was used forscreening Psychiatric morbidity in pulmonary tuberculosis patients and ICD-10 criteria were used to confirm the diagnosis of Anxiety disorders. Statistical analysis used: The data was analyzed by using ‘descriptive’ and ‘inferential’ statistics and to test association between the groups chi-square test was used. Results: Out of 120 Patients,15(12.5%) patients had panic disorder, 11 (9.1%) had Generalized Anxiety Disorder.In the study sample, 21.6% of patients suffering from pulmonary tuberculosis were showing Anxiety disorders. It was found that the prevalence of Anxiety disorders in patients suffering from pulmonary tuberculosis is not statisticallysignificant with socio demographic variables and clinical variables. Conclusions: As anxiety disorders ominously influences the course and outcome of the pulmonary tuberculosis with serious consequences, an early identification and intervention will prove productive.
