A comparative study of neonatal kidney functions between term and preterm babies

Abstract
The fetal kidney, the kidney in the first few days after birth, and the kidney in the subsequent weeks
and months are strikingly dissimilar organs both structurally and functionally. Fortunately, by the
challenge it offers, extra uterine life has a strong and rapid maturational effector renal function. It is
the purpose of this section to discuss each of these development stages as a guide to the
understanding of normal maturation, as a reference point for the assessment of disease, and as a
basis for the rational approach to therapy
