A online survey about paranormal experiences using Social Media
A.Alvarez-Ibanez, MD.; D. Hernandez-Morales; L. Pascual-Avila
Abstract
Strange phenomena have been a constant throughout the history of humanity: regardless of culture, era, or time frame, there are countless records of encounters with what we could call "phenomena of high strangeness."On January 25th, a small survey was made available to the entire community via Twitter, with the goal of determining how many people have had a paranormal experience according to the criteria outlined in the introduction. To achieve this, a simple survey was designed using Google Forms, which was easy to complete and did not contain any personally identifiable information. The initial tweet was posted on January 25th, 2023, and the survey remained open for 14 days (2 weeks). The study was closed to new data collection on February 9th, 2023. By the end of the study, the initial tweet had been viewed by 1,133 people. Of those who viewed the tweet, a total of 43 responses were obtained. Assuming that our sample is equal to those who viewed the tweet, we obtained a response rate of 3.79%. It should be noted that the topic of the survey could be sensitive for respondents, and while anonymity was maintained through the survey design, we believe that the participants' perception of being potentially identified may have played a significant role in the low response rate. we consider that we have simply opened the door to the study of two components that we consider to be beyond any doubt regarding strange or paranormal phenomena, and that even if the witness lies or attempts to deceive the investigator, analyzing all of them, regardless of the assessment of the certainty of their testimony, can lead to the design of objective tests based on factors associated with them, which can help us to discern true testimonies from false ones.
