AN ANALYSIS OF MAHATMA GANDHI NATIONAL RURAL EMPLOYMENT GUARANTEE PROGRAMME ON EMPLOYMENT IN TIRUNELVELI
M.SUJITHA, Dr.GOLDAGRACE DURAISINGH
Abstract
The Indian government created the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) to provide 100 days of guaranteed employment annually in rural areas in an effort to combat poverty. We investigate whether this program has given disadvantaged women in Tamil Nadu's Tirunelveli District rights-based social protection through guaranteed employment using focus group techniques. MGNREGA did not significantly assist the most vulnerable, while providing marginalised communities with some basic work opportunities. Nonetheless, there was some indication of minor but noteworthy changes in labour relations. To effectively achieve the objectives of this policy, additional pay, employment possibilities, improved execution, and a clearer understanding of women's caring obligations would be needed. For their living, MGNREGP offers jobs, and those who were illiterate were also given a chance. By offering alternative sources of income, this keeps individuals from migrating. A family cannot be sustained by a job that is offered to them for just 100 days in a single fiscal year. Families without land and those living below the poverty line should be given top priority when it comes to employment opportunities. Large-scale public awareness-raising efforts should be launched using information technology, and utilising ICT in rapidly emerging villages will help to increase involvement.
