Abstract

Background: The most prevalent head and neck infections are of odontogenic origin. The human oral cavity remains a host to variety of microorganisms both pathogenic and non-pathogenic. When these pathogenic microorganisms invade deeper tissues, or if host resistanceare weakened, they can manifest as diseases. Several species of bacteria present in the mouth can take advantage of a weakened human immunity and a poor oral hygiene to cause infections that can spread to the facial area, neck, and the rest of the body, resulting in disseminated infections
