Ayurvedic Evaluation and Management of Ardita Vata w.s.r. Bell’s Palsy – A Case Study

Abstract
Ardita Vata presenting with palsy of unilateral side of the face is resemblance to Bell’s palsy. This is
characterized by sudden-onset paralysis or weakness of the muscles to one side of the face controlled by
the facial nerve. Facial palsy is the commonest neurological disorder, in which 7th cranial nerve is affected.
The facial nerve conveys both Motor & Sensory fibres together with parasympathetic fibres.
Injured/Damaged facial nerve (VII) results in loss of function of facial muscle which also leads to cosmetic
impairment. In Modern science, steroids administration is the treatment of choice for complete facial
palsy. According to Ayurved Ardita comes under eighty Nanatmaja Vata Vyadhi. The disease of Ardita
Vata is explained in all Ayurvedic classics with its etiopathogenesis and treatment. Face is affected due to
Aggravated Vata, which leads to impairement in facial muscle functioning.
A 35-year-old Male diagnosed with Ardita Vata. Patient treated was with Nasya of Panchendriya taila and
other oral Ayurvedic medicines along with classical Ayurvedic Panchakarma procedure. The total
treatment span was 2 months; however, patient shown significant results after 20 days of treatment,
almost complete recovery was noticed. This case is ideal to show the effectiveness of Ayurveda treatment
in case of Ardita Vata and as a scope for future research on a large number of patients.
