CHARTING CAREER PATHS: EXPLORING FUTURE CAREER AUTOBIOGRAPHIES WITH YOUNG AUSTRALIAN UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS
Dr Suresh Babu
Abstract
With six Australian undergraduate students, the Future Career Autobiography (FCA) was investigated in this research. The study sought to investigate two topics: (1) the FCA as a qualitative tool for career assessment that supports reflexivity on future career plans and career storytelling; and (2) the consequences of narrative career assessment processes that engage young students in career research in a reflexive and systemic manner. The results validated a few narrative alterations in the FCA paragraphs of the participants. Those with less solid professional aspirations saw more significant shifts from these developments. The results expanded on the FCA's body of data beyond its use as a tool for qualitatively assessing narrative transformation and as a means of encouraging autobiography and facilitating reflexivity. This study supported the use of FCA in practice and research by adding the exit interview questions.
