Clinico-Epidemiological Profile and Outcome of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) Cases Admitted in Tertiary Care Teaching Hospital in Western Maharashtra, India

Abstract
Background: Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is an autoimmune disorder with multiple suspected trigger factors, including viral or bacterial infections, surgery, trauma, vaccination, medications. Many outbreaks of GBS had occurred in various parts of world. Such an outbreak has occurred in Pune area in Maharashtra in 2025.
Objectives:
1. To study socio-demographic and recent exposure to suspected risk factors for GBS cases presented to tertiary teaching care hospital.
2. To study clinical presentation and outcomes of GBS cases presented to the tertiary teaching care hospital.
Methodology: This cross-sectional study was conducted including all patients admitted in tertiary care hospital for GBS from January 2025 to April 2025. Details regarding socio-demographic factors, clinical presentation, possible trigger/ aetiological factors, management and outcome for all patients were collected.
Results: Total 26 cases included in the study. Out of all 26 cases, majority (69.23%) belonged to adult age group (18-60 years), with mean age of 31.38 (±19.95) years. Most of them were males (69.2%), married (57.7%), from nuclear family (69.2%). Majority of them had no history of recent infections (65.4%), surgery or trauma (96.15%), vaccination (96.15%), meat consumption (53.8%). While, most of them had history of outside food and water consumption and only 38.46% of cases used water filter at home. Of all, 22 cases recovered and discharged with 4 fatalities.
Conclusion: Although no suspected cause could be identified in current study, findings highlighted need for continued environmental surveillance and public health education is essential to prevent future outbreaks.
