Comparative Study between Graphene/Epoxy and CaCO3/Epoxy Nano-composites based on the Mechanical Properties
Nisreen M. Rahmah, Tawfeeq W. Mohammed
Abstract
This research has focused on the evaluation of nano-composites that formed from the combination of epoxy resin with either nano-graphene or nano-CaCO3 according to their mechanical properties. The goal was to compare between fabricated epoxy nano-composite specimens containing: 0.3, 0.6, 0.9, 1.2, 1.5 and 1.8 %wt of nano-particles. These composites' mechanical characteristics have been assessed using experimentally collected measurement data. The tests included: compressive strength, tensile strength, flexural strength and hardness. The tests have based on ASTM standards. It was observed that the sample containing 0.6% wt of nano-graphene showed the optimum values for mechanical properties, while the best choice for nano-CaCO3 was 1.5%. The results show generally that the strength and the hardness of nano-CaCO3/epoxy at its optimum loading is higher by 25-75% in comparison with that of GNPs/epoxy at its optimum loading
