Construction of Gender Roles and Ideologies in Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Little Mermaid” and Disney’s The Little Mermaid
Dr Astha Parashar
Abstract
Given their everlasting charm and popularity amongst growing children, the classic fairy tales have
continued to be rewritten, retold and revisited across eras and cultures. Their cinematic adaptations and
modern retellings have further enhanced their charm and people’s undiminished interest in their
narratives. The manner in which the selected original tales influence the formative years of children’s
lives naturally demands as well as paves the way for a much-needed re-evaluation of these classic fairy
tales vis-à-vis their movie adaptations and modern retellings. The present paper is an attempt to expose
how the original classical fairy tale “The Little Mermaid” by Hans Christian Andersen and Disney’s The
Little Mermaid confirm and establish the justification behind the gender stereotyping
