Correlational of Body Mass Index and Depression with Fear of Falls in Institutionalised Elderly – A Cross Sectional Study
Parag Ranade, Dr.Nalina Gupta, Dr Sandesh Sakpal
Abstract
Depression is considered to be the most common mental health problem among institutionalised older people. Fear of Falling (FoF) is a condition that, in its most basic form, is linked to anxiety, depressed symptoms, functional limitations, gait and balance problems, and the usage of a walking assistance, all of which contribute to a diminished quality of life and hinder daily functioning. The FoF is related with anxiety, depressed symptoms, decreased mobility, gait and balance problems, and the usage of a walking assistance, all of which contribute to a restriction in day-to-day functioning and a loss in quality of life. In this paper we proposed to analyse the corelation between Body mass Index (BMI) and Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) on FoF for elderly peoples The study was designed with collection of primary data through survey in Pune region with respondents age is greater than 60. The 90 samples were collected using convenient sampling method. This study evaluated the corelation between BMI and GDS on FoF using Pearson correlation, and Shapiro-Wilk test for normalcy of data. As a result, the study has shown a weak positive co-relation between BMI and FoF and a moderate positive correlation between GDS and FoF in institutionalised elderly. As a result, such individuals may be easily detected in primary care, and once found, it can provide solutions for improving balance, therefore lowering their risk of falling and enhancing mobility, depression ,social integration, and other aspects of their lives.
