Abstract
The current study was conducted to detect the contamination of the water and sediments of the
World Heritage component of the Hawizeh Marsh, Umm al-Naaj pond, with heavy metals (Pb, Cd, Ni) by
studying the concentrations of these elements in water and sediments. The study showed that the
concentrations of the studied elements in water in all locations and seasons all exceeded the standard
values specified by the American Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) and the Iraqi Standard
Specification No. (417) for the year (1967) for drinking water and household uses
