ECHOCARDIOGRAPHICALLY DETERMINED LEFT VENTRICULAR MASS IN HYPERTENSIVE PATIENTS WITH AND WITHOUT METABOLIC SYNDROME.

Abstract
Systemic hypertension is the foremost constituent of Metabolic syndrome, involving various
cardiovascular risk factors. Dual burden of hypertension and metabolic syndrome principally targets the
heart. Commonest forms of organ damage among such patients includes hypertrophy and ventricular
mass enlargement of left ventricle. This in turn is foremost risk factor to atrial fibrillation, systolic or
diastolic failure of heart so may lead to sudden death. Study was carried out to determine left ventricular
mass in patients those with metabolic and non metabolic syndrome. Total 150 subjects satisfying
inclusions criteria were included in this study. Metabolic Syndrome was observed in 67 (44.67%).
Among the metabolic syndrome patients,13(19.40%) had normal left ventricular mass,18(26.86%) had
mild,16(23.88%) had moderate, and 20(29.85%) had severe Left ventricular mass.
Mean Left ventricular mass among hypertensives with and without metabolic syndrome (208.52 and
171.98 respectively) was seen which is statistically significant. Metabolic syndrome has significant role
for development of Left ventricular hypertrophy. Metabolic syndrome adds to the severity of
hypertension related cardiac changes. Early screening of cardio metabolic risk factors among
hypertensives and its treatment alleviate cardiovascular risk.
