EFFECTS OF SOCIAL MEDIA ON THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF HIGHER SECONDARY STUDENTS

Abstract
Social Media applications are growing rapidly among the young generation all over the world. Especially
college students are widely engaged with social media. So, it will impact on students personal and
professional live. It gives more opportunity to the students like social awareness, keeps on touch with
friends, family members and offers innovative ways to learn. This study was aimed to find out the impact
of social media on students’ academic performance and the usage of social media participation on the
students’ knowledge. For this purpose, interview schedule was distributed among 50 respondents
(college students). The data has been collected through the questionnaire developed as SNS (Ellison,
Steinfield, & Lampe, 2007), Sociability (Kreijns & Kirschner, 2005), and Academic Performance (Stretch,
2005) and Social & Academic perceptions (Stretch, 2005) and student’s exams marksheet was analysed
which was later evaluated by using SPSS 26 (Statistical Package for Social Science) to validate the
conceptual framework. Quantitative data was tested using descriptive analysis; Mean, SD, t-test and
Correlation analysis were applied to fulfil the objectives of this study. The results show that there is no
significant gender difference in the academic performance of the adolescents. The calculated t-value is -
1.141 and the table value (p-value) is 0.260 with df (48). The result shows that it is Not-significant
(p<0.05). There are no significant challenges faced by the students in relation to social media, both groups
faced same type challenges in their day-to-day life. The calculated t-value is 1.038and the table value (pvalue) is 0.300 with df (48). The result shows that it is Not-significant (p<0.05). But there is significant
relationship shows between the social media and academic performance of the students. The calculated
t-value is 45.392 and the table value (p-value) is 0.0001 with df (48). The result shows that it is significant
(p<0.05). And, there is significant correlation shows between social media and academic performance of
adolescents. The r- value is -.437 and the p-value is 0.001508. And the result is significant at p<0.05. So,
it is recommended that students should consider the effects of social media sites and ensure effective
academic performance and collaborative learning. Additionally, this gain knowledge of associates the
significance of social media sites with the strength of their relationships with peers and teachers. Students
must be monitored by teachers and parents about how to do this and use these sites to create balance
between social media, academic, and student activities to avoid a set backs in the academic performance
of students.
