Abstract
First cervical vertebra, or the atlas, is essential for supporting the head and neck. A groove on the back of the atlas houses the vertebral artery, a vital blood supply that carries oxygen-rich blood to the brainstem and cerebellum. In certain people, this groove could develop into a foramen, leaving a tiny gap in the bone. The arcuate foramen of the atlas, also known as the ponticulus posterior, is an anatomical variation. The vertebral artery may be compressed by the foramen, which may be full or not.
