Abstract
Millions of diabetics use herbal medicine for economic and cultural reasons. The present study investigates the antidiabetic and antioxidant potential of the aqueous solution of fenugreek (Trigonellafoenum-graecum) at a dose of 50, 100 mg/kg in alloxan -induced diabetic model. Forty adult male rats, 14 weeks old, weighting 200-250g were divided into four groups (ten for each group). The first group was as a control group received distal water, the second group was injected with alloxan 120 /kg/b.w and nicotinamide 50 mg/kg/B.W positive group without treatment. The third diabetic group received treatment with 50 mg/kg/b.w. of fenugreek while, the fourth diabetic group received treatment with 100 mg/kg/B.W. of fenugreek. After rats received oral fenugreek daily, for 30 day, showed that (OGTT) was significantly reduced following fenugreek treatment while, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) increased after daily .Cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL and VLDL decreased significantly in all groups. In conclusion, the current study showed some potential benefits of fenugreek use.
