Background: Perianal fistula, or fistula-in-ano, is a common benign anorectal disorder that is treated mainly with surgery. Perianal fistulas are often characterized with significant clinical manifestations, such as local pain, inflammation, purulent drainage,and decreased patient quality of life. A fistula is typically defined as a pathological communication between two epithelialized surfaces. More specifically, perianal fistula is a chronic abnormal communication between the epithelialized surface of the anorectal canal and usually, the perianal skin.
