Evaluating Algeria’s LNG Exports Performance : A Constant Market Share Analysis
Amine Sadou, Mohamed Benbouziane
Abstract
Algeria has been a prominent player in the LNG market for several decades. Despite the global increase in LNG trade over the past two decades, Algeria’s LNG market share experienced a significant decline. In this paper, we examine Algeria’s LNG exports performance over the period 1996-2022 using the constant market share (CMS) methodology and UN Comtrade LNG trade data. The results show that the competitiveness effect is the major driving force behind Algeria’s market share loss over the study period. This study suggests that Algeria needs to enhance its market competitiveness, specifically, in response to the emerging LNG market players, such as Qatar, Russia, and the United States. Algeria also needs to develop differentiated strategies in order to improve its performance and secure a stronger position in the global LNG market.
