Anwesha Chakraborty, Dr. Deepa Biswas
Abstract
Ethno-medicinal plants play a crucial role in traditional healthcare systems, providing valuable therapeutic resources to communities worldwide. This study investigates the ethno-medicinal plant use in two districts, Jhargram and Paschim Midnapur, in West Bengal, India, aiming to document traditional knowledge, compare plant use patterns, and explore factors influencing variations between the districts. Ethnobotanical surveys, interviews, and participatory observations were conducted to collect data on plant species, traditional uses, preparation methods, and local knowledge and practices. The study identified a diverse array of ethno-medicinal plants utilized in both districts, with notable similarities and differences observed in plant selection, therapeutic applications, and cultural practices. Factors such as geography, culture, and socio-economic dynamics were found to influence plant use variations between the districts. The findings underscore the importance of preserving traditional knowledge and biodiversity while addressing healthcare needs in local communities. This study contributes to the understanding of ethno-medicinal plant use in West Bengal and provides insights for conservation efforts and sustainable healthcare practices in the region.
