Fundamental understanding of Ama from the contemporary understanding

Abstract

The concept of Ama mentioned in the Ayurvedic literature for the understanding of variations in physiology, its role in pathology & pathogenesis of the diseases and planning the therapeutics based on its various stages. Ama is a complex phenomenon not a single entity or substance, denotes the irregular or weakened process of digestion and metabolism that leads to build up of toxic by-products, which cannot be neutralized or eliminated by the body. However in certain situations if it manifests in more quantity it will be eliminated via upper or lower body channels
