Hypoglycemia reporting in primary care visits for patients with diabetes

Abstract
Introduction: Hypoglycemia is a common adverse effect of diabetes treatment in patients using insulin. Objective: Todetermine the frequency and content of hypoglycemia communication in primary care visits. Methods: 83 primary care visits from an urban health practice representing eight physicians and 33 patients using insulin or insulin secretagogues were examined. Results: Communication about interval hypoglycemia occurred in 24% of the visits. Conclusions: In this high-risk hypoglycemia population, communication about interval hypoglycemia and hypoglycemia prevention counseling occurred at a minority of visits
