IMPACT OF VESTIBULAR PHYSIOTHERAPY REGIME ON STATIC AND DYNAMIC BALANCE IN PATIENTS WITH CERVICAL SPONDYLOSIS: A RANDOMIZED CONTROLLED TRIAL

Abstract
Background: Amidst many characteristics of cervical spondylosis, studies suggest that there is strong correlation between the development of cervical spondylosis, duration of the disease and impairment of balance in such patients. But there exists a strong literature gap focusing over the effect of spondylosis at the cervical region on the balance domain of an individual. Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of vestibular physiotherapy regime on the static and dynamic balance of individuals suffering from chronic cervical spondylosis. Methodology: This study was a randomized controlled trial with a total sample population of 96 patients (48 patients in both the groups). Patients were recruited between the age group of 25 to 40 years of age, both males and females, patients who had history of cervical spondylosis for more than 6 months duration, and patients who were willing to participate. The participants were evaluated for static and dynamic balance using the Single leg stance test (SLS) and the Y-balance test respectively. Results: The data on normality testing revealed non-parametric nature due to which Wilcoxon Signed Rank test and Mann Whitney U test were used to evaluate the data within group and between group analysis. The within group analysis showed significant results in both the group, i.e., (p-value>0.05). Between the group analysis showed significant difference in values among both the groups (p-value>0.05). Since pre-evaluation of the sample size was not performed hence, a post analysis was performed using G Power software which yielded 94.65% power of the study. Discussion: There are many physiotherapy regimes which benefit the patients in terms of pain relief and enhancement of quality of life but there are still many patients which suffer from vestibular disorders as a comorbidity in such cases. Although, statistically the between group analysis showed significant difference in both the group mildly but, clinically the participants belonging to the vestibular rehabilitation group were more stable and had better quality of life at the end of the trial when compared to control group participants. Conclusion: For patients suffering from cervical spondylosis, there should be inclusion of vestibular rehabilitation program along with musculoskeletal program to enhance their quality of life and improve all functional outcomes.
