Investigating the relationship between vitamin D deficiency and COVID-19 disease

Abstract
Background and Purpose: Due to the high prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in Iran and the high mortality rate associated with COVID-19, this study investigated the serum level of vitamin D in patients with COVID-19 and compared them with healthy people.
Materials and Methods: This descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted on 158 people referred to Amir al-Momenin Hospital in Ahvaz in 2021. Among them, 81 people were in the case group, and their disease was confirmed by RT-PCR. Also, 77 people who were not infected with COVID-19 were selected as the comparison group. The required data were collected by the checklist designed by the researcher. They were analyzed in SPSS Ver. 22 using descriptive and analytical statistical methods.
Results: This study investigated the case group with a mean age of 43.89±0.04 and the control group with a mean age of 46.05±2.06. The mean vitamin D serum level was 11.72±12.53 in the case group and 20.86±15.19 in the control group. A significant difference was found between the two study groups regarding the mean vitamin D level (P=0.03).
Conclusion: The results revealed that the serum level of vitamin D in patients with COVID-19 is lower than in healthy people and the frequency of vitamin D deficiency is higher in these patients. Thus, it is recommended to conduct more comprehensive studies to investigate the role of vitamin D in these patients.
