Law Relating to E-Waste, its Impacts and Disposal Management
Dr. Anuradha Chadha, Er. Nikhlesh Chadha
Abstract
Managing E-waste has become a health and environmental issue at global level and in India. Most of the
e-waste generated in India is handled in the unregulated informal sector thereby posing a serious threat
to the environment and health risks to the handlers due to lack of professional skills and technology for
its safe recycling. The problem of e-waste has forced legal initiatives to be taken at global level and
national level for E-waste management with a view to reduce environmental impacts and at the same
time to optimize reuse, recovery and recycling of valuable materials. The objective of this paper is to
highlight not only legal steps taken but also to discuss the impacts of e-waste on environment and on
health along with challenges still posed to the environment and policy makers but also to recommend
encouragement of research into standards of hazardous waste management through the transfer of
processing and recycling technology from developed to developing nations along with motivation of
environmental monitoring and the regulation of hazardous waste-disposal by the Governments for
reducing the illegal trade of e-waste, as well as formulation of effective legislations for curbing this
menace.
