Locating Culture within Linguistic Discourses: A Literary Analysis
L.Infant Roshan Tony, Dr.R.Mercy Latha
Abstract
The metaphysics of culture takes up the ultimate foundation – the language, on which all other values are built and regulated. The necessity to speak about ‘language’ arises as the paper ventures into discourse analysis and cultural manifestations of literature, language and speech acts. A language that functions, conditionally, as a system of conventions, within a linguistic community, carries knowledge, which underpin certain ideological values of culture. Language, here, acts as a carrier of culture, with all its effective conditioning on its subjects.Furthermore, the limitless ‘social forces’ that acts through the language, asserts a limitless power over its subjects and tenaciously conserve their agency in determining the values within the community. This paper intends to analyze the compound structuring of language and its grip on cultural within the multitude of social discourses. Furthermore, the paper intends to lay out, a ‘post-structural’ analysis of the value system that veils the ideological prohibitions which limits the ‘free-play’ of the cultural beings.
