MODELING AND SIMULATION OF ETHERNET LOCAL AREA NETWORKS

Abstract
A local area network is a private computer network within the same campus or building with a few
kilometres in length and with a transmission speed in the order of megabits. Ethernet networks have
become the most widespread standard of the existing types of local area networks because they are
cheap and efficient if not operated under overload conditions. There are several specifications for
the physical layer in the Ethernet: 10base5, 10base2, 10baseT, 100baseT, etc. The most widely used
standard is 10baseT, which operates at 10 Mbps over twisted copper pair. This paper presents the
modelling and simulation of a shared or switched 10baseT Ethernet network with up to 10 hubs, 5
switches and 100 workstations. Visual Slam was used as simulation language through the AweSim
platform and Visual Basic version 6.0 as support or auxiliary language. The final product of this work
is a user-friendly platform capable of simulating the networks described above. Although the
10BaseT standard has been sufficiently studied, the importance of this work lies in the fact that it
can be the starting point for developing a simulator that supports the Fast Ethernet and Gigabit
Ethernet standards
