Modularity of Syntax: A Study of English and Arabic
Asst. Prof Saja AbdulAmeer Mohammed
Abstract
The present study highlights notion of interlanguage and errors made when translating statements from
one language to another, especially Arabic and English, investigating the ability of third-year university
students in translation by gathering thirty participants randomly to solve a translation test. Using 5-point
Likert Scale showed no students achieved an excellent level, 66% ranked a fair level, and 67% of errors
made are grammatical. This shows students need more grasp on the rules of both languages, since they
have syntactic and grammatical differences revealed during translation that shapes the relation between
two languages.
