Abstract
Epilepsy is an enigmatic neurological illness characterized by recurrent seizures resulting from abnormal electrical activity in the brain. This disorder arises from an imbalance between excitatory and inhibitory impulses in the brain, frequently due to alterations in the in the physiology of receptors and ion channels provoked by neurotransmitters. Molecular abnormalities significantly trigger the onset of epilepsy and complicate seizure management. In last two decades, many studies have been performed on herbs and their active principles, which revealed their therapeutic potential for many complex diseases like epilepsy, cancer and auto-immune diseases. Present article focuses pathophysiological aspects of epilepsy and also highlight recent herbal based approaches in the discovery of new antiepileptic molecules with least side effects.
