Prevalence of Iron Deficiency Anemia and Dietary Profile of Pregnant Women of University Campus, District Peshawar, Pakistan

Abstract
Background: The Iron deficiency in pregnant women cause pregnancy related complications, premature births and still birth.Iron deficiency is a major issue among Pakistani female population especially in rural and poor communities. The common causes of anemia include parasitic infestations such as malaria and hookworm; infections like HIV and hemoglobinopathies, the predisposing factors are grand multiparity, young age, low socioeconomic status, and illiteracy. Methods: This study wascarried out among 144pregnant women of age range 15-45years. After taking written consent 3 to 5 ml blood samples werecollected from each pregnant woman and a predesigned questionnaire was filled. The Biochemical andhematological test was carried out and the test results were collected. Nutrient intake of the pregnant women was assessed through 24 hours’ recall method. Thedata were entered and analyzed. Results: It was found in the study that thefrequencyof iron deficiency (anemia) in women with positive pregnancywas (77.10%). Iron deficiency anemia found in pregnant women was comparatively high in 3rd trimester (51.38%) than second trimester (13.88%) and 1st trimester (11.80%). Among the diagnosed 111 (77.08%) anemic pregnant cases of the present study, 2.1% were severe anemic, 6.2% were moderate 68.8% women were with mild level anemia.About 6.9% pregnant women serum ferritinlevel were in the range of <12ng/ml and 81.9% were with range of 12-30 ng/mL. Conclusion: Anemiawas found very commonin the pregnant women of the studied populationand the iron deficiency was measured in an anemic sample. The frequency of anemia was found with high rate among middle and low socio-economic and illiterate groups. There is a dire need tofocus on health education, balanced diet and antenatal care of pregnant women especially of poor socioeconomic and illiterate population.
