REASON AND SATISFACTION LEVEL REGARDING LIFE STYLE OF FISH VENDORS OCCUPATION

Abstract
The fishery sector of India is extremely contributing to the country’s economy. It is contributing
to the world wide nation’s income, imports and exports, food and nutritional development security and
in employment opportunity for generation. Fish has been associated with man as a food commodity
since ancient times. Fish is a highly perishable food commodity. Fish is nutritionally rich as it has high
content of good quality proteins. It is also a good source of vitamins and minerals. The fish vendors play
a number of important roles in the marketing system of fisheries sector of kanyakumari district. In the
channel of distribution of fish, fish vendors connect the fishermen, number of middle men and the
ultimate consumer. The people of kanyakumari district are devout fish eaters, to whom the fish vendors
supply number of fish to the consumers. The fish vendors supply the fishes at our houses, markets,
sometimes by social media marketing and by road side vending places which is near to the customers.
Fish merchants carry out number of additional activities in marketing like sorting, grading, freezing,
cleaning, preserving and icing the fish without spoiling the taste of fish. Job satisfaction is an important
aspect for any person to achieve a sense of completeness in their work. A feeling of fulfillment or
enjoyment that a person derives from his job can be termed as job satisfaction. A great deal of this
research has linked to job satisfaction to individual attributes and the reason for their occupation. The
present paper examines the aspects of job satisfaction among fish vendors and reason for selecting the
occupation in six various fish markets in Nagercoil town. A total number of 120 fish vendors were
selected for the study by using quota sampling method.
