RETROSPECT AND PROSPECTS OF QUALITY MANAGEMENT IN ETHIOPIAN UNIVERSITIES
Asalf Habtegeorgis, G.C Maheshwari, Rajan Yadav
Abstract
Quality management is one of the vital elements in higher education that guarantees the nation's growth and development. The study aims to identify the status, challenges, and future scope for quality enhancement in Ethiopian higher education. The study took a sample size of 472 participants, and the descriptive survey was conducted based on a deductive approach through simple random and purposive sampling techniques as a method. The qualitative and quantitative research approaches were utilized, and various inputs were gathered from reliable and valid sources. The respondents' demographic and background information was checked using frequency analysis via SPSS software. Furthermore, correlation and regression analyses were used to assess the impact of these challenges on quality management practices. The study revealed that the most significant challenges of Ethiopian universities were demonstrated with low enrollments; inadequate infrastructure, substandard teaching methods, and lack of commitment towards growth and development are worth mentioning. Thus, the study's essential findings were the intrinsic need for re-engineering and overhauling the entire faculty training and development systems, resource allocation mechanism, and continuous improvement in technology to maintain the balance between quality education and nation-building. It is recommended to open a communication system with stakeholders through feedback forms and grievance cells to address the issues and challenges. International tie-ups for exchange programs and customizing the global curriculum in various courses can fill the gaps and bring quality to higher education.
