Abstract
The role of gig workers in the Indian economy has become increasingly prominent in recent years, reflecting the country's dynamic labor market and the proliferation of digital platforms. This abstract examines the impact of gig work on India's economy, considering its contributions, challenges, and implications for various stakeholders. Gig workers, also known as independent contractors or freelancers, engage in temporary, project-based work facilitated through online platforms and apps across diverse sectors such as transportation, e-commerce, and freelance services. The flexibility offered by gig work appeals to a wide range of individuals, including students, homemakers, and those seeking supplementary income. However, gig workers often face challenges such as income instability, lack of benefits, and uncertain job security. Despite these challenges, gig work has emerged as a vital component of India's economy, providing employment opportunities, driving innovation, and contributing to economic growth. Policymakers, businesses, and society at large must address the needs and rights of gig workers, ensuring fair treatment, access to benefits, and regulatory frameworks that balance flexibility with worker protections. Understanding the evolving role of gig workers in the Indian economy is crucial for shaping policies and strategies that foster inclusive growth and sustainable development in the digital era.
