STUDY OF EPIDEMIOLOGY, CLINICAL PRESENTATION, SEVERITY, VARIANTS OF GUILLAIN-BARRÉ SYNDROME IN A TERTIARY CARE HOSPITAL

Abstract
GBS is an autoimmune, acute, frequently severe, polyradiculoneuropathy. It may present
as rapidly developing ascending motor paralysis with associated autonomic dysfunction and/or cranial
nerve palsies. Aim is to study clinical profile of GBS and its variants, common subtype and severity of
Subtypes, correlations between clinico-epidemiological profile and subtypes.This is a descriptive cross
sectional ,retrospective study done in the Department of Neurology involving 21 cases of GBS based
on Clinical brighton citeria and
results were 14 were males and 7 were females,25-40 years had the highest incidence, most common
antecedent events are fever and vomiting. Majority of patients were found to be alcoholic ,not
smokers. Most common variant in our study is AMSAN variant. AIDP variant had the highest mean
mEGOS at the time of admission, longest duration of stay in hospital and cranial nerve impairment
,AMAN variant had the shortest stay most common GBS variant in older patients in this study is AIDP.
