Shock Indices and Risk Index: Development, Uses and Limitations

Abstract
Shock index (SI) is the ratio between HR divided and SBP. It has been evaluated in many studies in shock patients or at risk of shock due to many causes: trauma, myocardial infarction, pulmonary embolism, sepsis, hemorrhage, and ruptured ectopic pregnancy. HR and SBP were used traditionally to assess shock in these patients, but they may be normal in the compensatory stage and can be affected by many other factors such antihypertensive medications
