Social Concerns in the Novels of RK Narayan
Dr. Vinod Gupta
Abstract
R.K. Narayan is one of the most leading and eminent Indian authors of twentieth century. His writings make India accessible to the outside world. His novels are true exponent of Indian society, specifically southern part. His social consciousness is evident in almost all his novels. He is a keen observer of society and its happenings. But he looks intently and patiently and smiles at the oddities and eccentricities of society. He is neither angry like Mulk Raj Anand nor philosophical like Raja Rao. He hardly attempts social criticism. His depiction of society is free from any prejudice but always charged with gentle irony and light humour. He minutely observes the society and presents the most realistic picture. Narayan’s central character represents his social sensibilities. His male characters are aware of social and political issues, but they never commit themselves to any ideology. He exposes social evils but never preaches. He exposes social hypocrisy to make us realize. Almost all his novels form his idea of social awareness. He is not an angry old man, nor a politician championing the cause of the masses. But he is a merchant of human metaphors, an artist with milk of human kindness flowing full in his heart.
