Abstract
BACKGROUND TB (Tuberculosis) is found to be a health burden due to its widespread nature in developing nations, which is now spreading to industrialised nations in the form of atypical presentations because of the rise in MDR (Multidrug Resistance) and the predominance of immune-deficient survivors. Spine-related symptoms are found in 3–5% of all TB patients. Paraplegia caused by tuberculous infection of the spine is called "Pott's paraplegia," and paraplegia caused by tuberculous infection of the spine is called "Pott's spine." MATERIAL & METHODS Patients were included in this study if a whole spine MRI or CT scan revealed a spinal infection and a combination of histology and microbiology verified that the infection was tuberculosis. The age group of patients affected was from 16 years to 75 years, with the youngest patient coming to us being a student of 17 years old and the oldest being 73 years old with kyphosis & paraplegia. Slides prepared from the infected fluid & tissue revealed epithelioid cells, well-formed granulomas and Langhans’ type of giant cells with or without necrosis on microscopic examination. RESULT In our study, the characteristic clinical features of spinal tuberculosis with which patients presented to us included chronic back pain with difficulty in walking, tenderness, stiffness, and spasm of the muscles (43%); fever, malaise, and weight loss; cold abscess (28%); gibbus/hypo-lordosis/kyphosis (22%); and myelopathy/neurological deficits (7%). CONCLUSION Similar to the patients in the study conducted by Pertuiset E. et al., Kotil K. et al., and Tuli SM, patients in our study only sought counsel when they experienced extreme pain, a noticeable deformity, or neurological issues. They alsosought medical consultation for the same complaints.
