TRAUMA AND HEALING IN TONI MORRISON’S ‘HOME’
Satheesh N., Dr. M. Prabha Punniavathi
Abstract
Morrison in her novel, Home presents the black siblings, Frank Money and Ycidra Cee, one with mental wounds and post traumatic disorder from the cruelties of war and the other, the sister with the physical wound, besides the mental pain of separation and loneliness. The racial brutalities are played out on the background throughout the novel. Lotus, the neighborhood once chased them away and was hated by both but later heals and rescues them physically and psychically. Frank despite being a war veteran had to go through a number of racial discriminations and insults. This added to the post war trauma had caused a frequent traumatic hallucinations and mental depravities. Ycidra Cee, deserted by her unreliable husband finds a job which is dangerous. Treated like lab rat she is only rescued at the last moment by her ever-protective brother. Both are equally traumatized both racially and otherwise and Cee is driven to the verge of death. Frank cannot have a decent relationship nor can he lead a normal life. Lotus, the home and the care of the women at Lotus take them back and give them a better life. The paper looks at how from the echoes of slavery and the racial traumatic effects of the black experiences, the redemption and rescue is symbolically performed by the siblings with mythical overtones at the bottom of a tree.
