AMAN SHAH SYED ALI, ZAMRI MAHAMOD, MOHAMMED AZLAN MIS
Abstract
Needs analysis is a crucial stage in the process of data collection. It allows for systematic input on the requirements for developing a robust module suitable for the target clients. This qualitative study aims to collect needs analysis data for the creation of Malay essay writing modules for primary school students whose first language is not Malay. Eight primary school teachers from Semporna district, Sabah who teach Malay subjects were selected to participate in the study. Participants were selected for the study using purposive sampling and met the established criteria. Thematic analysis of the data from these semi-structured interviews was conducted using the ATLAS .ti 2.84 (Mac version). Four themes were identified, namely, (i) the process of teaching and learning essay writing needs to emphasize the technical aspects, format, and nature of the essay, (ii) the teaching and learning activities on essay writing need to be differentiated according to students' language skills, whether in or out of the classroom, (iii) emphasizing aspects of students' thinking skills and idea generation, and (iv) aspects of students' motivation. The findings of this study suggest that teachers can improve their teaching and learning approaches by adopting a more systematic writing theory that is more appropriate to students' backgrounds. The research findings also served as a major clue for the following study, which will focus on the design and development of essay writing modules for non-native speakers in primary schools.
