Abstract
Pakistan is considered to be among the top most countries facing floods and droughts due to harsh consequences of change in climate conditions. Variations in climate possess adverse effects on the farming, soil, as well as water, health conditions, poverty and all of the 4constituents of food security i.e food production, accessibility, availability, and utilization. The reason behind this inquiry is to review the present literature on the influence of changing climate conditions on human health and security of food in Pakistan. A thorough literature search was conducted using the literature search strategy. Approximately 25 relevant journal papers, published government reports, conferences, ebooks, policy briefs, and students published dissertations were reviewed, out of which 15 were selected. The databases used were Google scholar, research gate, PubMed, Environmental fate database, CINAHL, Springer, Elsevier, and agriculture, nature and climate journals. Keywords such as climate change, food security, nutrition, food production, availability, accessibility, crops, malnutrition, food supplies, variability, vulnerability, adaptation and health and wellbeing were used through Boolean operators’ strategy. Pakistani studies published in the last 10 years were included; however, preference was given on the last 5 years. Based on literature findings, increased temperature and rainfall alterations have been found to have resulted in water shortage and loss of food production leading to the problem of food security which ultimately affects human health. Review analysis depicts that the change in climate conditions poses a huge threat to the security of food, and also its production, consumption, and distribution. The impacts on human health mainly result in malnutrition and other nutrition-related morbidities and mortalities. Literature also suggests that food production in Pakistan will remain threatened in upcoming years due to rising temperatures. To prevent such adverse effects in the future, effective policies and strategies should be made and implemented. Researchers should expand their efforts on maintaining the nutritional value of the crops along with the increased crop production.
