WOMEN IN HIGHER EDUCATION ISSUES AND CHALLENGES - AN HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE
Dr. V. KATHIRESAN
Abstract
The aim of this article is to describe the Women in Higher Education Issues and Challenges.
Education is considered as a potential instrument of individual development as well as social
advancement. It is closely associated with the utility of manpower and quality of life. It makes the
people understand their rights and status on the one side and their duties and their responsibilities on
the other side. Those who have remained backward and underprivileged over the years can be
empowered by education to assert their rights and to fulfill their places in the society. Education is
found to be a powerful instrument for removing disparities, disabilities and discrimination in the society.
A society can be brought forward only by the education. This powerful weapon occupies a vital role in all
aspects of the development of an individual or a society. The investment in education resulted in many
scientific inventions and development. In the last few centuries almost all the countries in the world
have invariably invested in the education of its youth. The development of women education in higher
education becomes important only in the past few decades. However the women enrollment in higher
education is comparatively poor in rural and urban colleges. This study mainly focuses on the issues and
challenges behind the enrollment.
