Dr. María Gabriela Balarezo García, Dr. Alex Gabriel Lara Jacome, Dr. Kenia Peñafiel Jaramillo
Abstract
Introduction: In primary care, approximately 10% of hypertensive patients suffer from depression and another 10% have depressive symptoms. Purpose: To determine the association between hypertension awareness and depressive symptoms in primary care. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in a primary care population that included 2676 at-risk individuals in 78 primary care practices. Results: Depression was reported by 14.1% (116/822) of the conscious hypertensives, by 8.7% (38/439) of the subjects who were unaware of their hypertension and by 9.3% (129/1,382) of the normotensives. Conclusions: Depressive symptoms are common in hypertensive persons, even without comorbidities, if the person is already aware of his or her hypertension
