THE OBESITY AND ITS ECONOMIC COST

Abstract

Obesity is gradually becoming a worldwide public health challenge bringing with it significant health and economic impacts. It has an adverse effect on society and individuals along with a major impact on the economy. The main objective of this study is to look into different aspects of how obesity can lead to a heavy burden on the economy. Estimation has been done on the economic impact of overweight and obesity for 46 countries being part of OECD using a cost-of-illness approach. Direct and indirect costs of obesity from 2020-2050 were estimated from a social perspective and future projections were done on global GDP.
