TEACHING ENGLISH FOR SPECIFIC PURPOSES (ESP): STRATEGIES AND CHALLENGES IN ESP TEACHING

Abstract
English is taught for academic purposes and specific purposes in colleges and universities as a part of ELT.
English for academic purposes (EAP) is aimed at meeting English learners’ academic needs for
study purposes. This is a kind of instructing and improving students’ writing, speaking, listening, and
reading skills and helping them apply these skills to the academic world. EAP provides training
in English language skills needed for academic study; they include listening comprehension, fluency
development, reading, grammar, writing, and vocabulary. English for Specific Purposes or ESP is an
approach to the education of English orientated for specific purposes (scientific, technological, and
business areas). The ESP is based on the design of specific courses to give response to the needs of
students who, beyond the learning of the common language, require practice regarding certain
professional areas. In short, English for Specific Purposes (ESP) is a language approach whose goal is to
provide learners with defined goals and language elements they need to function as professionals. Each
ESP course should be tailored to meet the specific needs of the learners. If the class consists of biologists,
they should be learning specialized vocabulary from texts related to that domain; if the learners want to
become engineers, then poetry and short stories will not meet their needs. Still, teachers or trainers face
a lot of challenges in teaching ESP courses. They implement various strategies to teach ESP courses in the
classrooms and online as well.
This paper predominantly focuses on strategies and challenges in teaching ESP courses. This paper also
analyzes the role of teachers and technology in ESP classrooms
